Lava

A couple of weeks ago, my child's last fish died. Until then, I had been using his aquarium light as a night light for the room. With the tank being empty and future plans being made to use it for hamsters, I decided to drag out my old, dusty lava lamp I had packed away in the basement. A friend bought it for me from Trivet's in Cincinnati, way back in my hippier days. I used the heck out of it and now I'm glad to see it back. I pulled it up from the basement , dusted the incense dust off of it and set it up on a timer in my kid's room. It burns from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. and it still works great...even after being boxed up for 7 years. The kids love it too. It lights up the room with a cool, blue light and the baby will stare at it as I rock him to sleep.

So you can understand why this blog entry by Blogger "The In Crowd" struck a chord with me:

RIP Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge

Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, wife of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and member of Psychic TV, died of heart failure on Tuesday. Lady Jaye and Genesis were in the midst of an ongoing life-art project to make them look more alike through matching breast implants, haircuts, and other body modifications. The aim was to merge their identities into a single "pandrogynous" being, named Breyer P-Orridge.

O.k. I was looking over a list of:

10 Epic Halloween Costumes

I didn't think many of them were epic, but one guy in the list blew my mind. He's done 3 robot costumes that are just wonderful to behold.

An Aliens Powerloader

A Battlemech

And a Matrix APU.

Check out these and other projects on his site: http://hallert.net/

I bow down to this guy's costume making skills. He's truly a Halloween Geek after my own heart.

A Night With David Sedaris

My wife just called. She just got me tickets to see David Sedaris this Saturday night for my birthday. I'm pretty happy about that. I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't really think about getting tickets because our babysitting options have been pretty crappy lately. Those tickets are expensive enough, but throw 30 bucks worth of babysitting in and it really hurts. Fortunately, she worked something out with her mom.

I can't wait to see him though. We saw him about 5 or 6 years ago when he came to town with Sarah Vowell. We laughed so hard our faces hurt. I love that guy so much...I wish I could keep him in my pocket.

And so begins October's Scary Movie-a-Thon

If you're not familiar with this annual practice of mine, this is where I join Blockbuster or Netflix on a trial offer, every October. That way I get free, scary movies of my choosing for a couple of weeks. Since my wife and kids do not wish to share this experience with me, I usually sit up every night with the lights out and my dog by my side, drinking a couple of beers and watching some blood curdling shit. Actually, my oldest son would love to watch scary movies with me, but we watched a couple of the Goosebumps shows on Cartoon Network (they're running them every night this month) and they scared the pants offa' him. Plus, man-child that I am, I'm definitely not the type to subject my 5 year old to the gore that awaits me in those flicks.

To their benefit, Netflix (my chosen provider this year) kicks Blockbuster's ass on availability and delivery. They had everything I wanted and, after signing up for the trial Monday night, had delivered my DVDs by Wednesday. I think if I were to actually pay for one of these services, I'd choose them.

So, with the wife at work, the kids in bed and a belly full of pot pie, I started off the Movie-a-thon with Severance

Chicken Pot Pie

I love chicken pot pies. It's one of my ultimate comfort foods. I could eat several in a sitting with a big glass of milk, curl up on the couch under a blanket and watch re-runs of Sanford & Son or Barney Miller until I fell into a deep and satisfied sleep.

Unfortunately, I can't do this tonight, since there is a salmonella recall of Banquet brand pot pies.

The USDA said the Marshall, Mo., plant made Banquet and store-brand pot pies. All of the pot pies made at the plant have "P-9" printed on the side of the box as part of a code above the use-by date.

The pies are safe when cooked according to directions, said ConAgra spokeswoman Stephanie Childs.

William Keene, a senior communicable-disease epidemiologist at the Oregon Public Health Division who is tracking the outbreak, disagreed.

"If you cook anything long and hot enough you can kill salmonella. But the story is that hundreds of people have apparently not been able to do that; either they didn't follow the instructions or the instructions were inadequate."

We have a bunch of Marie Callender pot pies in the freezer right now. They are also made by ConAgra. I will be checking them out tonight.

How about a limited edition Salvador Dali action figure from this stunning "Art Army" collection, hand sculpted by Mike Leavitt. Check 'em out. There's Banksy and Andy Warhol too.

C'mon...they're only 800 bucks apiece.

Since I can't go out next weekend for proper birthday shennanigans, then this weekend will have to suffice. So, it's pretty convenient that several of my favorite Dayton watering holes will be hosting a local music fest this weekend for me to drag my drunken ass around to. A few of my friends will be dropping by my place round about 4 p.m. We'll cook out and then head down to the Oregon District for some fun and music. I'll be there, mostly to see Enon. I know some of the other bands by name, so it will be nice to be able to cruise from bar to bar, having the obligatory shot and a beer at each bar and then sample some new music. I really wanted to see Sleepybird, but they're up against Enon, time-wise, so they lose. My schedule looks like...
